Sermon: A New Priesthood

Theme: John the Baptist is the archetype of a transformation in the ways in which we seek God and share God’s love in the world.

Purpose: We will see our own transformation experiences in the life of John the Baptist.

Scriptures: Malachi 2:10-3:1 The covenant that was profaned by Judah and the alienation from God.

Luke 1:5-17 The prophecy of John the Baptist’s birth to Zechariah.

Questions:
Why didn’t John the Baptist follow in his father’s work of serving in the temple as high priest? What was John the Baptist’s purpose in preaching in the wilderness? What was he hoping would take place in people’s lives as a result of baptism? How is baptism similar to the forgiveness found through the temple sacrifices? Should we see John’s ministry as a rejection of
the temple or as a movement into a new possibility for sharing Christ? How does this type of transformation relate to our own experiences of change in the church today?
