Sermon:  “Love God, then Do What is Right”

Theme:  God calls us to be aligned with love and forgiveness, and in that way our motivations will lead us to do what is generous, loving, and kind.

Purpose:  We will learn to set aside excuses for doing what is right.

Scriptures:  1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 “We never sought to flatter or with a pretext for greed.” Paul and Silas shared the gospel with a spirit of openness and generosity.

Matthew 22:34-46  The greatest commandment, to Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.

Questions:

In what ways does an attitude of generosity affect our relationships with God and the people around us? How does jealousy, envy, and bitterness affect our relationships with God and the way in which we perceive ourselves? What difference does it make when we act out of a compassionate and generous heart? How do we learn to put the love of God and love of our neighbor ahead of our own “self-protective” impulses? In what ways does defensiveness or a combative attitude harm our emotional and spiritual health? In what ways can we be healed of our envy and fear?

Scripture is read from NRSV Bible (New Revised Standard Version)
